Sound & Town Report, The (Larchmont, NY) - January 17, 2013
Deceased Name: Ingeborg Childs
Ingeborg Childs, a resident of Larchmont for more than 60 years, passed away Dec. 21, 2012 at the age of 101 at her home in Florida, just days before turning 102. Childs was the co-founder of what was the WARC in 1949, which is now known as ARC of Westchester. Her oldest daughter, Patricia, was born with Down Syndrome and because of a lack of understanding, knowledge, compassion and a "keep in the closet" general attitude of the uninformed public, she was prompted to help create a support group of parents in the same situation. From this early beginning of just a handful of dedicated and devoted parents, this organization is now nationally recognized. Childs was instrumental in starting a day school in Pelham and sat up late into the night typing correspondence, invoices and balancing ledgers. She was convinced that the mentally handicapped could become valuable members of the community in a positive way through education, patience and the understanding of each individual's limitations.
Childs was born in Hoboken, N.J. on Dec. 23, 1910 to Richard and Maria Jaeger. The family moved to Brooklyn for a very short time and then to Mamaroneck where they lived on Palmer Avenue and in the Norman Rockwell House before moving to Braxmar Drive South in Harrison. Her father, who developed and held the formula for bouillon cubes, was executive vice president of the Pure Food Company, home of Herb-ox, which was located on Mamaroneck Avenue.
Childs is also a 1929 graduate of Mamaroneck High School. She was married on Nov. 1, 1940 to William Harris Childs of Sutton Manor in New Rochelle. They lived in Larchmont Acres until Mr. Childs went into the Army during World War II as an MP stationed on the Hudson River piers in Manhattan. After his discharge, they moved to their longtime home on Seton Road in Larchmont.
Mrs. Childs was a long time member of the Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church and assisted for many years with the annual rummage sale in the boutique area. She was also a member of the National and Westchester County Glass Clubs. She worked for many years at Anderson's Bookstore.
Childs is survived by her daughter, Virginia, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom live in Florida. She is also survived by a niece by marriage, Harriet Childs Miller of New Rochelle. Her husband, William, and daughter, Patricia, predeceased her in 2011.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the ARC of Westchester would be appreciated. Arrangements are pending.
