JournalNews, The (Hamilton, OH) - November 20, 2005
Deceased Name: Marguerite Charlotte Derickson Dockum : Former Butler County educator broke family longevity record
JournalNews staff report
HAMILTON - Marguerite Charlotte Derickson Dockum was an educator dedicated to her family and her church and "probably one of the most genuinely kind people I ever met," said her grandson, Todd Dockum of Oxford.  "I remember her telling me at her 100th birthday party that her goal was to live to 102 to set our family record, and she made it," Dockum said. "She told me, 'I saw it all, and with God's help, I made the most of it.'"   Marguerite Charlotte Derickson Dockum, formerly of Seven Mile, died Nov. 8, at her residence in Tavares, Fla. She was 102.  A Butler County educator, she is remembered by her many extended family members, friends and former students as a role model for today's much sought-after "Midwestern family values," Todd Dockum said.
From 1946 to 1970, she raised her family and co-managed with her husband a 150-acre dairy farm with 20 cows she helped milk by hand. "They lived the Butler County way of life. They would get up in the morning, milk the cows, go to school and teach all day and then come home, milk the cows and make dinner," Todd Dockum said. "Hard work, dedication to family, education and their church were the pillars of their way of life."
She was liberated early by driving one of the first automobiles in Butler County from the Derickson family farm in Hanover Township to Hamilton High School and then to Wilmington College, he said.   "My grandmother and grandfather were lifelong educators," Todd Dockum said. "She was teaching at Hanover Township Elementary when she met and married the principal, Russell Dockum."
She taught fourth grade at Jacksonburg and Seven Mile elementary schools and was a prominent participator in Butler County 4-H Clubs, Collinsville Grange, Hamilton Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls, and Seven Mile Presbyterian Church. She retired in 1969, eventually moving to Tavares, Fla. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte Dockum White of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Casper, Wyo.; her son Lt. Col. Robert Dockum, U.S. Air Force (retired) of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.   A memorial service was held at Lodge Terrace, Lakeview Center, Altoona, Fla., on Nov. 9. Memorials can be sent to Hospice of Lake & Sumter, Inc., 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares Fla. 32778, or Union Congregational Church, 302 North St. Clair Abrams Ave., Tavares, Fla., 32778.
