Minnie P. Simmons HILL

(Elizabeth S. HILL)

Elizabeth was born 9 February 1880. She lived for a time in New York state.  As a child she went across country in a covered wagon.  She was a fiesty youngster. Her nanny locked her in the closet one day for unbecoming conduct.  A short while later she asked Elizabeth if she was ready to come out and behave. Elizabeth replied, "No, I will let you know when I am ready to."  Spirit like this kept her alert in her later years.

She married Harry  Hill and they moved to Eustis.  Their home overlooked a Lake Gracie, with a meandering shoreline near downtown Eustis.  She was a member of  First Presbyterian Church.  She also was a member of Chapter C., P.E.O. Sisterhood in Eustis.  She enjoyed many hours playing bridge.
On her 100th birthday, February 9, 1980, many friends gathered for a birthday party at her home given by her friends. Upon arrival they discovered their honoree was absent.  That morning she had arisen in pain.  Her trip to the emergency room turned into an emergency appendectomy and a longer stay in the hospital.  She never liked her real name and went by Elizabeth instead.

Elizabeth died in October of 1980.  ....FS

Orlando Sentinel, The ( FL ) - May 15, 1996
Deceased Name: LAKE PIONEER MAX HOOKS DIES AT 103
Max Hooks, one of Lake County's pioneers, died Tuesday of congestive heart failure. He was 103.   He was born in Clermont and spent most of his life there. His great-grandparents, the late Herring and Mary Hooks, moved from Americus, Ga., after the Civil War in 1868. They homesteaded land in the Yalaha area and raised 10 children including Max Hooks' father, Robert C. Hooks   In 1874, Herring Hooks and four or five other settlers went on a hunting trip and wandered into a hilly section surrounded by lakes, which is now Clermont. Herring   Max Hooks Hooks built a log cabin there, which later became the first schoolhouse in South Lake, near the Florida Citrus Tower and State Road 50, said Max Hooks' nephew, Oakley Seaver.   Max Hooks helped set up the barge to pump out the Monte Vista Canal between Lake Minnehaha and Crescent Lake while in his early teens. He also helped the local pharmacist fill prescriptions.   In 1916, Max Hooks was appointed tax collector in the young city of Clermont.   Max Hooks stumbled into the dairy business when his eldest son, Hollis Herring Hooks, became sick and almost died. The doctor prescribed fresh milk for the toddler, so Max Hooks purchased a cow.   The cow produced so much milk that neighbors began buying it. To keep up with the orders, Max Hooks bought several more cows. His first dairy farm was on 10th Street on a 35-acre tract that his father owned.   In 1925, he moved his 40 head of cattle to the current site of the Green Valley Country Club. His house was about where the 18th hole is today.   When he moved to the site, Max Hooks was able to transfer his cows from one pasture to another because State Road 50 did not yet cross the marsh west of Clermont.   Once pasteurization was required, Max Hooks began to sell his milk in bulk to Datson Dairies in Orlando. Later, he got rid of his cattle and planted citrus on about 40 acres on what is now Max Hooks Road.   Max Hooks' first wife, Mae, died in the mid-1960s. He remarried in 1972 and moved to Leesburg with his new wife, Shella.   His youngest daughter, Maxine Ramey of Clermont, attributes her dad's living more than a century to abstention from liquor and smoking and to eating well.   ''I can only remember him being really sick once, when he had a flu for five days,'' said Ramey, 79. ''He always ate one piece of fruit, a piece a meat and one vegetable from above the ground and one vegetable from below the ground (daily).''   The state Division of Motor Vehicles revoked Max Hooks' license when he was 99 because of failing eyesight.   Max Hooks was the oldest member of First United Methodist Church in Clermont.   He is survived by his wife, Shella; sons, Hollis Herring, Thomasville, Ga., Jerry Oliver, Dunlap, Tenn., Robert Max, Fort Worth, Texas; stepsons, Ray Taylor, Clermont, Ralph Burns, Oregon; daughters, Marion Miller, Maxine Ramey, both of Clermont; stepdaughter, Ruth Helm, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.   Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Kurfiss Funeral Chapel, 1018 West Ave., Clermont. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kurfiss Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Charles Kinder will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakhill Cemetery, Clermont
