Information supplied by GFAHS
Martha, according to her death record, was born 18 May 1812 in Montgomery, Chatham County, Georgia, daughter of Jerry Revels. The death record of one of her sons indicates his father was Edwin.
Nevertheless, Martha is first found in Jacksonville in 1850, seemingly a widow, with 4 children, William, John, Washington & Elizabeth, all under the age of 10, living with a Thomas family.
William R. Revels Sr. was born 1 Apr 1839 and died 19 Aug 1919.
John Revels was born 18 Jun 1842, Clay Co., Florida and died 14 Jan 1929
Washington & Elizabeth have not been traced. Clay County was created on December 31, 1858, from a section of Duval County.
Martha married Joseph Oglesby, 6 Jun 1855, Jacksonville, and they are found in 1860 census, Middlesburg, Clay, Florida. Son John is nearby living with a Wilson family. Son William is in Madison County, with a wife, Elizabeth.
Martha married in 1866, Edward [Jesse] Malphus. In 1870 and 1880 she was with him in Clay County. Grandson William lived with her in 1880, although the census does not give his relationship. 1885 census for Clay county is not available.
1900 census has Patsy Malphus five doors from her grandson William Randall Revels Jr, with whom she lives in 1910.
William Randall Revels Sr. was born 1 Apr 1839 and died 19 Aug 1919 in Putnam County. He may have been the man living in Volusia County with wife Hannah J. from 1870 until 1910.
Martha’s age varies in census records. Only 1910 shows she could have been born as early as 1812.

Teacher broke racial barriers in Winter Garden
Juanita Coney Maxey was the first black woman to vote in Winter Garden in the 1930s. The Winter Garden woman was celebrated throughout the years for her "brave steps" and helped paved a path for black citizens in Central Florida.
Her trip to the polls in 1937 broke racial barriers in Orange County at time when African-Americans feared going to the polls. A riot had an erupted in Ocoee a decade earlier when two black men tried to vote. At least five men were killed and several buildings in the city's black neighborhoods were torched to the ground during the riot. For years after, blacks felt intimidated and avoided voting.
Poll workers tried to turn Maxey away, thinking she could not read. She stood her ground and insisted they hand her a ballot.
"She wanted to vote. She felt it was her right," said niece Jacqueline Lucas, 72, of Eustis.
Maxey, who was honored through the years by several organizations, including the West Orange Culture Keepers, died Thursday. She was 103.
She made the biggest impact in the classroom. She taught hundreds of children, many of them black migrant workers. In her 45 years of teaching, she opened the doors to a bright future for many students, said former student Dorothy Dukes.
"She was kind. She was strong. I loved the ground she walked on," said Dukes, who was in Maxey's class in first, second and third grade.
Maxey decorated the classroom with their schoolwork and paid out of her own pocket for periodicals, such as National Geographic, and school supplies to help her students' education. In a class with 50-plus students, Maxey encouraged the advanced students to tutor those who lagged. Dukes said she has compared that classroom to others in her life, and none measured up.
Dukes, 69, became a child-care advocate and ran Community Coordinated Care for Children for 10 years. She credited Maxey for success after she provided Dukes a strong academic foundation.
"Between the love she provided her students and the quality [of education] she provided her students, she was able to help so many people become professionals," she said.
Sylvester Johnson said Maxey was his "number one" teacher. He was in her classroom in first grade. He also spent about five years with her in Sunday school. Maxey went the extra mile to inspire her students, he said.
During class, Maxey asked students what they wanted to be when they grew up. A young boy replied: "A white policeman." At the time, blacks in Central Florida did not have many career options except fieldwork, Johnson said. Maxey found a black police officer from Eatonville and invited him to the classroom the next day to inspire her students.
"It was something we had never seen," Johnson, 77, recalled. "Having her in church and also in school, that gave me a great advantage."
His teacher also helped his wife, Barbara Johnson, who taught at the elementary school for a year. Maxey often dropped by in the afternoons to give the new teacher advice on her lesson plans.
Maxey, who was born in Abbeville, Ga., hadn't always planned to be a teacher. As a child, she expected to be a barber like her father. But he encouraged her to do something else. Her family moved in the early 1900s to Eustis, where her father became the first black barber.
Maxey graduated from Florida A&M University and started teaching at Winter Garden School for the Colored in 1937. The school later was renamed William S. Maxey Elementary School in honor of her husband, who died several years ago. A road and community center also bear the family's name. But both she and her husband, who was the school's principal, are recognized for their contributions to area.
"She was a pioneer in education at the time when black children truly needed it. Until the Maxeys came to Winter Garden, there was no formal education for black kids," Barbara Johnson said.
The couple did not have children of their own. She cared for everyone in her community, though. Maxey also started the town's first leadership-training program for girls, the Charmettes. Many of them obtained careers in education, law and medicine. And she taught Sunday school at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church in Winter Garden, where she was a member for 73 years. She taught Sunday school for nearly the same length of time.
She also lavished affection toward her nieces, nephews and godchildren. Lucas said her aunt spoiled her as a child.
"She had a way with people. She was good, and she loved people," she said. "And they loved her as a teacher."
