Deceased Name: MILDRED C. RAST GAVE MONEY, TIME TO AID LEESBURG HOSPITAL
LEESBURG -- When Mildred C. Rast died last week, Leesburg Regional Medical Center lost one of its most generous and devoted benefactors.
Known to her friends and family as "Midge," she worked more than 8,000 hours as a volunteer. She also contributed the money and time that helped bring LRMC a chaplain program, a chapel, a therapeutic pool and improvements to its nursing facilities, said Desiree Coleman-Cohrn of the LRMC Foundation. Rast died March 13 in her sleep. She was 100.
In 2002, Rast and her husband, George, became the first lifetime members of the LRMC Auxiliary. Their portrait hangs in the hospital's Rast Chapel, and students can pursue health-care careers with the help of the Midge and George Rast Educational Endowment Fund.
"Her whole self, her whole personality, caused me to ask her to marry me," said George Rast, 101. "She devoted her life to helping others, including me."
The Rasts became one of the few centenarian couples in the country when Midge Rast turned 100 in January.
Niece Anella Preble of West Hartford, Conn., remembered Rast as a second mother and an impeccable "career girl."
Born in 1905 in Wheeling, W.Va., Rast graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1928 with degrees in home economics and nutrition. As an undergraduate, she joined the Delta Zeta sorority, of which she would become the oldest living member.
She then began a career as a dining-room manager in restaurants in New York City and Pittsburgh. When one of her dining rooms was acquired by the Marriott hotel chain, Rast became dining manager for the Marriott family, beginning a lifelong friendship and correspondence with them and helping raise their children, Preble said. Working in restaurants, Rast acquired excellent table manners. "When she got a tray in the hospital [when she was a patient], if the rolls weren't in the right place, she'd move it around. . . . Not only is she going to brighten heaven, but she's also going to straighten it up," Preble said.
Rast moved to Orlando in the late 1950s, Preble said. Preble said Rast "was pretty gutsy for a woman alone in that era" and had no children.
In 1965, she married George Rast and moved to Leesburg , where she began her volunteer work with LRMC, raising money and working at the snack bar and front desk. "You couldn't say no to her . . . she had a great sales personality" when she sought donations for the hospital, Preble said.
To make one of her philanthropic contributions, Preble said, Rast once sold a diamond ring that had been smuggled out of the former Soviet Union before she bought it.
Coleman-Cohrn said Rast was humble but also liked to remind people, " 'I tell it like it is,' which she did. If she didn't like your hair, she'd tell you."
Rast also is survived by a son, G.M. Rast of Atlanta; a nephew, Robert W. Coffman of Coshocton, Ohio; and three grandsons. Rast's funeral was Thursday. Beyers Funeral Home, Leesburg , handled the arrangements.

Deceased Name: George Rast dies
LEESBURG - "Mr. History" has left Leesburg quite a legacy.
City patriarch George Rast died in his Lake Port Square home around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, according to historian and friend Rick Reed. His brother, William, and sister-in-law, Winnie, were at his side.
Rast was 102½ - a half-birthday he celebrated last month. "I just saw him on Saturday and he was fine," said Reed. "He was my friend and we developed a really sweet relationship over the years."
Rast was born in Orange Springs on Jan. 29, 1904. In his autobiography, Rast wrote, "About 5 million males were born that year. Today, less than 75 of us are still alive ... Clearly, I've beaten the odds. Someone born when I was had a life expectancy of just about 40 years." He was 99 when he wrote the book.
Rast spent his early childhood in Weirsdale. When he was 12, he and his family came to Leesburg in a horse-drawn carriage. His father moved the family to Leesburg , he wrote, because of the educational opportunities. In 1916, Leesburg had a school that taught grades eight through 12 - the new brick Lee School on downtown's Lee Street.
At the time, 1916, the city's population was about 1,500, as Rast could best remember for his autobiography, "My First 100 Years."
He graduated in 1922, and in January 1923 started working at First National Bank on Main Street, which is now the home of United Southern Bank. He worked his way up to vice president and member of the board. At the bank, known as a "farmer's bank" because it provided loans for farming equipment and livestock, the man who would later found Leesburg 's Lions Club chopped the sheets of money sent by the U.S. Treasury into individual $1, $5 and $10 bills.
Rumor has it that Ma Barker's gang cased the bank in the 1930s, shortly before authorities gunned the gang down in Lake Weir. "Apparently," Rast wrote in his book, "she concluded that we had a gunman stationed on our second floor balcony. We didn't."
In 1929, Rast married his first wife, Alice. He was impressed by her creative abilites - she was a poet - but the young couple's marriage rapidly fizzled.
Nearly 10 years later, he married again, this time to a widower named Julia who had a young daughter, Juliet. Rast raised Juliet as his daughter, and the two also had a son, George MacKenzie Rast, whom they called Ken.
Ken Rast described his father's involvement in the Leesburg community as "constant." "The main thing I suppose a youngster would remember is his heading up the watermelon festival for so many years," Ken Rast said. He was referring to the Leesburg Watermelon Festival, a big event in the 1950s, when Lake County was a major producer of the fruit.
Ken Rast also recalled his father's involvement with the Lions Club. Rast traveled the world for Lions conventions, Ken Rast said.
During World War II, Rast and some other community leaders took a road trip to the national Lions convention in Philadelphia. Because of the war, gas was rationed, so Rast and his friends collected gas rations from fellow Lions, his son said. His car loaded with gas cans and a few extra tires, they were off. "In those days, civic clubs were a lot more important than they are now," said Ken Rast.
Ken Rast said his father had many offers from movers and shakers in the banking industry to move to bigger cities in Florida, and even to New York or Chicago. But he always chose to stay in Leesburg .
"In later years, he more than once said ... he'd made the right decision," Ken Rast said. "He was really happier in a nice small town community like Leesburg ."
After Julia died in 1962, Rast spent another few years as a single man. Then he met his third wife, Midge. The two married in 1965, and lived together until Midge's death last year. The couple reached a rare landmark before Midge's death - both were centenarians.
Rast had nearly a century of Leesburg history available to anyone who wanted to listen.
"I always loved to listen to all his stories about Leesburg ," said friend Jim Hill.
" Leesburg has just lost 'Mr. History,' I guess," Leesburg Commissioner Sanna Henderson said. "He was a great man and he certainly did a lot for Leesburg ."
Henderson said that Rast's work with the Leesburg Heritage Society was largely responsible for its many collections. "He would get many people to donate things to the museum, and he loved doing that job," said Henderson.
"Mr. History" was a moniker many knew Rast by. But he wrote in his autobiography that he had little interest in the subject initially.
As he read tales of Leesburg in a column for The Daily Commercial written by Belle Hamilton, he became a repository of information for her. Rast wrote that he also started taking an interest in his family's history. He eventually ran the city's Heritage Society and Museum.
The City of Leesburg proclaimed April 12, 2001, as George Rast Day, acknowledging "97 years of good citizenship, and your many years of contributing to the development and betterment of the City of Leesburg ."
Ron Wallace, publisher of The Daily Commercial and South Lake Press, became acquainted with Rast after taking over at the paper. "George has left a legacy that will never be forgotten in Leesburg ," said Wallace. "It's a very sad day in Leesburg . It's a great loss."
Rast had been named the honorary chairman of Leesburg 's sesquicentennial committee, which is planning next year's festivities. He was given the honorary position as a nod to his service as the chairman of the city's centennial committee in 1957.
Leesburg Mayor Bob Lovell said he met Rast in 1955. "He was a very dignified man," said Lovell, adding that Rast was a very proud and honorable person. "He was a remarkable man," concurred Hill.
Rast is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, William and Winnie Rast of Fruitland Park, son and daughter-in-law, George MacKenzie and Ann Rast of Suwanee, Ga., stepdaughter Juliet Mahoney of Leesburg , four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at St. James Episcopal Church in Leesburg . Beyers Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Leesburg Regional Medical Center Foundation.

Sibyl Price Rhodes passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at the age of 108 in Mount Dora, Florida. She was born in 1903 in West Virginia, the third of six children of Adam and Mary Jane Price. Sibyl went to high school in Leesville, Ohio and later graduated from the Canton School of Business in Canton, Ohio. Sibyl was a strong, independent lady who made her way in the business world long before there was such a thing as “Women’s Lib.” She often said that she would never marry because she “didn’t need a man to take care of her.” That changed when she met Lloyd Rhodes whom she married in 1927. During their married life, Sibyl and Lloyd started up and operated small newspapers in California and Ohio, the latest being the Wellsville Press in Wellsville, Ohio. Sibyl also owned and operated three different restaurants in Newark, Ohio during the 1940’s and 1950’s while raising three sons. Sibyl and Lloyd retired to Fruitland Park, Florida in 1978, where they owned and managed a 9-unit apartment building. She and Lloyd were active in the Community United Methodist Church in Fruitland Park for many years prior to her retirement to the Bridgewater in Mount Dora. In 1996, at the age of 93, she wrote and published her memoirs, The Life and Times of a 20th Century Woman. She also compiled a collection of letters written by her and Lloyd in 1929 which describe their road trip from Ohio to California in two booklets titled “Travels with Julia” (the name of their 1927 Model T Ford) and “Almost as Nice as Cleveland.” Sibyl was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Lloyd Rhodes, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Lloyd Jr. (Lovell) of Canton, GA, Cecil (Lois) of Simi Valley, CA, and Kenneth (Linda) of Mount Dora; seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778 or to the Leesburg Food Bank, 1305 Sunshine Ave., Leesburg, FL 34748. Arrangements are by Allen J. Harden Funeral Home, 1800 N. Donnelly Street, Mount Dora, FL 32757. Phone: 352-383-8178.
