HOLMES, Mary Strake
Mary, born in 1895, came from Nebraska to Ft. Drum, Fl where she
met and married Nathan Holmes on January 18, 1914. In 1916 they moved
to Ft. Pierce. They had three children and she lived to see many
descendants even into the fifth generation. She was the matriarch of a
St. Lucie County cattle ranch family and lived on in her Georgia Avenue
home after Nathan died.
She was active in her church, St.
Andrews Episcopal Church. In the 1930's with the country rebounding
from the stock market crash, she was well aware of the needs of the
people in her area. This was a time that saw little growth in St.
Lucie. Not many people were moving into St. Lucie County. She was
faithful and diligent, and she was always generous with her time and
talents.
