Houston 1756-1838

John Carroll Houston and Jane Harvey Houston

A Spanish census dated "Junio" 2, 1814 lists nominal residents of Talbot Island.  Among those listed are John Houston the father, age 58, his wife age 55, two sons between the ages of 7 and 16 and one daughter. This John Carroll Houston was a Captain in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War.  He also supplied beef to the Continental Army.  The family has a copy of the voucher paying for same which includes a description of the Houston brand used on his cattle that was raised on his plantation in Beaufort, S.C. and on Big Talbot Island, Duval County Florida. John Carroll Houston was born about 1756. 

Where he was born and his parents were is unknown at this time [it is now known].  He married Jane Harvey of South Carolina and Georgia. Jane Harvey was born 1755, probably in S.C.  On the 20th of January, 1800 John C Houston was granted two hundred, sixty five acres in the district of Beaufort S.C. in St. Lukes Parish, signed by A. B. Darby, deputy surveyor General.  He was also given several grants of land by the Spanish governor of Florida.

John Carroll Houston b. 1789 South Carolina d. 1856 Talbot Island, Nassau County, Florida.  He married Elizabeth Susannah Christopher the daughter of Spicer Christopher and Mary Susannah Greenwood in 1811.  His second wife was Mary Greenwood Braddock the daughter of John David Braddock and Martha Bluet Christopher who he married in 1825.

 
Thomas Ashman Houston b. 1796 South Carolina d. unknown.  He married Asia 

Bayard b. 1800 Georgia d. unknown

Martha Houston b. 1798 South Carolina d. unknown She married Jessie Gresham in 1836.

William Henry Houston b. 1799 South Carolina d.1845 Duval County, Florida.  He married Sarah Ann Harrison in 1826.

James Robert Houston b. 1800 South Carolina d. 1861 Middleburg, Clay County, Florida.  He married Elizabeth G. Mattair in 1835.
